Montana requires an employer to have Workers' Compensation Insurance. In most cases, if you have just one employee, you are required to carry Workers' Compensation Insurance.

How do I get Workers' Compensation Insurance for my Fire Department?

Talk to your insurance carrier; they can often enroll your Fire Department in a plan. Montana State Fund is also available.

Don't assume that your Fire Department is covered by Workers' Compensation.

Fire Districts and Fire Service Areas enter Interlocal Agreements; these agreements get modified or changed over time. The best way to be sure is to have your Fire Department carry Workers' Compensation Insurance.

Montana Department of Labor and Montana State Fund administer Worker's Compensation.

Each agency has strict rules on reporting accidents and posting Workers' Compensation information in the workplace. Your insurance carrier can supply the forms and posters needed.

A good information source for Workers' Compensation is: "An Employer's Guide to Workers' Compensation in Montana" by David M. Steingold
